How to keep your pets cool this summer

Hot weather can cause many problems for pets, so it is important to keep them cool and happy in the heat … after all, they can’t tell you when something is wrong.

  • Don’t leave pets in cars, not even with the windows open.
  • Make sure your pet always has the opportunity to move to a cooler place if it’s feeling hot. Don’t let any pet sit out in strong sun.
  • Make certain your pet has plenty of access to clean, fresh water and it is in a weighted bowl to ensure it can’t be knocked over;
  • Recognise the signs of heat stroke e.g. excessive panting, extreme salivation, distress and collapse.  If this happens you need to gradually cool down your pet’s body temperature by wrapping them in cool, wet towels.  Seek veterinary advice.
  • Don’t leave your dog alone in a car, glass conservatory or caravan - even leaving it for short periods can be deadly;
  • Groom your dog on a regular basis to keep hair short and your pet cool.
  • Walk your dog in the morning or later in the evening when it is cool. Never exercise your dog during excessively hot weather;
  • Apply pet safe sun screen to your dog – they can get sun burnt too.
  • Discard left over food as it can smell in the heat.
  • Fishponds and aquaria can get very hot in the summer - check regularly.
  • If transporting pets during hot weather, keep windows open when the car is moving.
