On Friday 28th November, Black Friday will offer the chance to grab some great bargains.  This amazing shopping phenomenon began in the United States and always occurs on the Friday following Thanksgiving.  As soon as the Thanksgiving feasts are over, the shoppers descend to the stores in the hope of making great savings on their Christmas Shopping.  

Here are some facts about Black Friday!!! 

  • In the 1800's Black Friday used to refer to stock market crashes.
  • Originated in Philadelphia, the name "Black Friday" was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving
  • The date of thanksgiving was indirectly determined by holiday shoppers as a joint resolution from congress agreed that Thanksgiving would be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November to give shoppers an extra week of shopping before Christmas.
  • There is often a high level of sickness by employees on Black Friday known as "Friday-after-thanksgiving-itis".
  • Black Friday became a national term in the 1990's
  • Some say that Black Friday refers to retailers going into the "black" - a time when they become more profitable
  • Black Friday was the biggest shopping day of the year in America in 2001.
  • Black Friday is now an International affair as shoppers throughout the world are offered great deals.

So, if you've still got Christmas shopping to do, make a list (and check it twice) and hit the shops in the hope of bagging some great deals and if you can't bear the stress, why not avoid the crowds and check out the great deals online. 

And remember - Buy Local where possible.
