So so as far as museums go. Stone carvings to last you a lifetime. One small area of Somerset Light Infantry. Mostly full of uniforms. would have liked to have seen weapons through the ages. Cafe was expensive and when asked if we could have some more hot water she replied "we don't do refills".

We don't go to Taunton very often and my main memories of it are being dragged along on my wife's Christmas shopping trips so it was a great relief to see Taunton has more to offer than a commercial center sucking money from your pockets.
Infact the museum is totally the opposite. Set within the old castle at the center of town, where it has been since the 19th century, the entrance was actually free putting me in a very good mood for the visit.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful and the exhibits thoughtful and well planned. We ended up having a nice light lunch in the cafe rounding up our stay to about three hours of very enjoyable entertainment.
We made a sensible donation at the end of our visit as we felt it was thoroughly deserved and would recommend it to anyone looking for some diversion/education on a cold winter's day.

Child friendly and visiting children seemed fascinated and were asking all sorts of questions. There was a lot of local information , the Duke of Wellington and Lt Chard who fought in the Zulu wars. Lots of uniforms and weapons on display and up to date information of present regiments. Also there was an art gallery showing works from a local artist. Welcoming staff, a museum shop and small cafe. Worth a visit

Decent museum covering Somerset from the Jurassic age right up to more recent events. I love to bring my young children here as there is always something to see and do that we missed the last time. There is often an event in the lower ground floor or trails to mix it up a bit. Ideal for a rainy day when out and about in town. Finding somewhere to park is tricky if you want to keep the day cheap. Morrisons for preference if you keep the visit under a couple of hours.
