We visited in the Spring about 4 years ago, and they were starting to put the gardens back to the original plans of Gertrude Jekyll.
A bit disappointed as the gardens didn't seem to have made much progress. The rills were all blocked with leaves, I know it's Autumn.
On the plus side. We could take our dog Oscar in as long as he was kept on the lead, and he was allowed in the shop and the cafe.
Free parking is another plus

Lovely gardens to walk around to suit all tastes.

Lovely little hideaways to sit in dotted on the walks around the gardens. I would love to go again on a rainy day with a flask and sandwiches and sit in the Temple Arbour and watch the rain tumble down in front of me.

There's a second hand book shop with an extensive selection of books very reasonably priced.

The cafe was nice, a sandwich costs £8.50 so you may want to bring your own and eat it in the grounds.

Definitely worth a visit!

We spent a lovely day at Hestercombe Gardens, which we didn’t realise were so large.
In addition to the formal gardens, Victorian & Edwardian, we simply got lost in the less formal areas and found such peace and quiet. We split the day with some lunch in the restaurant then did more exploring. It really was delightful and we’ll certainly visit again when we’re in the area.

Although it was September, there was still plenty of interest in the gardens, which were designed jointly by Edwin Lutyens & Gertrude Jekyll. We only had time for the formal gardens but there seem to be lovely walks around the Georgian landscape garden. As we were part of an organised group we were taken round by the head gardener.
We had an organised private dinner, which was excellent and I imagine the food in the cafes would be as good.

One of my favourite places to take the boys. Loads to do and even ducks to fees!

Good free parking, ok for motorbikes. Lovely landscape gardens with interesting buildings, wooded walks and plenty of places to sit. Colourful, pretty gardens near the house with fantastic views and a watermill. Good shop, plant sales area and very good cafe for cake, sandwiches and light lunches. Think there is a restaurant in an area of the house.

We started with a great long walk exploring the extensive grounds, then came the gardens which were good, bit late in the year but we could see the great planting which must have been stunning in season. The house was good too , with photo exhibitions etc. All in all a good visit would recommend Hestercombe.

Whether it's a tranquil and peaceful walk through the gardens or a delicious peace of cake in the coffeeshop, this is a beautiful place to do it.

Weddings are also available here and there's a old orangery to use as well.

If you really enjoy the place you can keep the costs down by signing up to the visitor subscription service available.

Beautiful and breath taking gardens, vistas and stately home. The food while a bit expensive is well worth it.

Hestercombe House and gardens are close to Taunton, the history of the place is fairly complicated, but the last ‘owners’ made the house the HQ for Somerset Fire Brigade and as it was no longer a loved family home, the inside is rather gaunt and unloved there is an exhibition of modern impressions of woods/woodland on the upper floors- somewhat different to what you might expect, but it will take time and money to return this building to a handsome house. The setting is beautiful with views across rolling hills and fields. The gardens are very interesting and well laid out, Gertrude Jekyll and Luytchens both had input, many mature trees including large magnolias, sweet chestnut, walnut and liriodendrons . Water has been used to liven up the delightful herbaceous borders with a descending chain of lakes culminating in rills and little fountains. We enjoyed following the many paths and at each turn there was a different view and still many roses despite it being mid September.
The organised buffet lunch was well done and later on we enjoyed tea and cake.
A most interesting day out

Formal gardens with scented roses, a wonderful walk through woods with a cascade, ducks on the fish ponds, follies and birdsong, a great café for coffee, tea, or lunch - and all just a couple of miles from Taunton - what more could you ask.

The formal tropical garden at the front of the house was lovely. I could have spent a couple of happy hours there just enjoying it. The children enjoyed running around. Slightly disappointed that the Cascade was under repair but we still enjoyed paddling in the stream at the bottom. All in all an enjoyable afternoon rounded off by an ice-cream and browse in the gift shop.
