Royal Sutton Coldfield Chamber president Gary Phelps served up tips on storytelling in PR and marketing when he spoke at a business and curry club in the Royal Town.

Gary, a former newspaper editor who now runs a successful PR agency, was invited to speak at the Four Oaks Business and Curry Club recently.

He told the 48 diners at the event – held at Four Oaks Tennis Club – about his own background in news, and how the skills he learned in the newsroom now form the basis of his work in PR, public affairs and education.

He also told club members how they might discover and share their own business story, by funding the aspects and values that made their businesses stand out.

He also explained how storytelling could help Birmingham and the West Midlands recover from the ‘reputational turbulence’ it has suffered in recent years.

Gary said: “It was great to be able to speak to so many different businesspeople about the power of storytelling, in such a welcoming setting.

“Everyone is capable of understanding storytelling – it’s one of things that separates us from the animals; it’s in our DNA.

“If you can take those skills and apply them to your business, you can create compelling messaging that will make customers, clients and partners want to be part of your story.

“As Chamber President, I want to engage with other groups in Sutton Coldfield to make sure they understand the huge benefits of joining the Chamber.

“This was a great opportunity to do that and enjoy some amazing food too.”

Food for the event, which was organised and compared by Raaj Shamji, was supplied by the award-winning Smethwick-based Mahirs Experience.
