St Giles Hospice is celebrating after this year’s Treecycle campaign became its most successful ever.
The environmentally-friendly recycling collection picked up 3,200 Christmas trees in return for a small donation to St Giles, raising over £35,000 – more than double the January 2019 total.
Last year’s Treecycle picked up 2,143 trees, raising £15,500 for the hospice.
More than 100 volunteers hit the road to collect trees from homes and workplaces in Lichfield, Burton, Sutton Coldfield, Tamworth, Walsall, Rugeley and surrounding areas between Monday 6th January and Saturday 11th January.
Last week’s Treecycle was the sixth year the campaign has taken place, with money raised helping to fund the hospice’s work supporting patients with potentially terminal illnesses and their families.
Zoe Wright, Senior Events Coordinator at St Giles Hospice, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with this year’s Treecycle campaign. It grows every January but this year it really seems to have taken root and flourished!
“St Giles would like to say a big thank you to everybody who has signed up to have their trees collected and especially to our army of volunteers who have been out day and night in all weathers to collect everyone’s trees.
“DHL provide us with vital logistics support and volunteers and we really couldn’t do it without the help of local companies Lichfield Tree Works and Greener Composting in Wall.”
Zoe added that the collection had also been supported by teams from Central England Co-Operative, Darwin Electrical Services, Wincanton for Screwfix, LNP Sound, Xoserve, Vesta Space, Jaguar Land Rover and HIB, as well as many individual volunteers.
“Our Treecycle volunteers have been absolute heroes and we’re extremely grateful for everything they have done,” added Zoe. “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we hope they will spread the word about Treecycle so that next year we will have more volunteers to help us collect even more trees.”
