Highclare School has been celebrating the talent of local young artists through its community competition, The Highclare Junior Art Competition 2021.

Pupils from across the Midlands were invited to create a piece of art depicting a journey in the theme of artist Paul Klee’s work.

The initial inspiration for this year’s theme was the quote 'A line is a dot that went for a walk'.

Paul Klee took inspiration from his travels in his abstract paintings, using line in inventive ways to create bold and colourful scenes of places he visited, and is a key inspiration of Birmingham based graphic artist Alex Edwards, known as Brumhaus.

Pupils from local primary schools were invited to turn the dot starting point into a line that depicts a journey – a local journey or walk, a journey they have taken to a far-away destination or a journey they would love to take.

Alex Edwards, aka Brumhaus, was invited to view the work and said: "I’m very honoured that I have been asked to write a few words about your recent competition entries. Paul Klee is one of my favourite artists because he explains what he sees in simple shapes and colours, something I try to do as well.

"I am absolutely blown away by all of your amazing pictures of Birmingham and beyond. Recognising some of the places you have drawn and painted has been fun.

"What stands out to me from all the entries is that you have all clearly enjoyed making art and have been really inspired.”
