Since establishing National Allotments Week in 2002, the National Allotment Society (NAS) has led the way in protecting and preserving allotment sites nationwide. Their ongoing work highlights the vital role allotments play in promoting healthier lifestyles, sustainable living, and stronger communities.
This year’s theme, “Grow to Learn – Lifelong lessons from the allotment”, highlights the educational, personal development and wellbeing benefits of spending time on a plot.
Here in Royal Sutton Coldfield, we are incredibly fortunate to have thriving, sought-after f allotment sites that perfectly embody this spirit, offering residents a rewarding connection to sustainable, community-led gardening.
Across Sutton Coldfield, allotments provide much more than a place to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers. They are valuable green spaces that promote healthy lifestyles, encourage biodiversity and bring people together through a shared love of gardening and the natural environment.
Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council is proud to celebrate National Allotments Week by recognising the vital contribution that allotments make to the local community and the dedicated volunteers and plot holders who care for them. The Town Council would like to thank the allotment associations, site committees and individual plot holders whose hard work ensures Sutton Coldfield’s allotments remain vibrant, welcoming and productive spaces.
The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield has 10 allotment sites. Five of these sites currently fall under the stewardship of Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council, with the remaining five scheduled to be transferred from Birmingham City Council to the Town Council in the near future

Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council has invested over £250,000 across the Sutton Coldfield Allotment sites and continues to raise their standards, making them valuable assets to the town and ensuring they provide a genuine sanctuary for the residents who use them.
Beyond the health rewards of growing nutritious produce and staying physically active, Sutton Coldfield’s allotments provide massive environmental value as highly diverse ecological corridors. The mosaic of vegetable patches, fruit trees, compost heaps, and small ponds creates a patchwork of micro-habitats, providing essential food and shelter for crucial pollinators, birds, and small mammals.
They are wonderful places to share knowledge between generations, making them perfect examples of this year’s ‘Grow to Learn’ theme. Every allotment offers opportunities to learn something new — from understanding the seasons and improving soil health to discovering the best ways to attract pollinators and grow delicious home-grown produce.
