The Friends of the Green Association was formed in December 2018 to help preserve the grassy space of Dugdale Crescent in Mere Green. The area has been used for decades by local families for dog walking, children playing, seasonal events and general socialising. Vice Chair Judy Lewin explains “We had all become rather complacent about our lovely green space, because we understood it was protected by an old covenant. Turns out that the mysterious covenant actually never existed!”.

So local residents set about door knocking and fundraising and now have a committed group of over 90 people involved in all sorts of activities, involving not just residents but local businesses too.

Members receive discounts for using local shops and traders. The Association has received a grant to buy wildflower seeds to improve the appearance and biodiversity of the green and future plans for more trees, bird and bat boxes are in the making. Funds come from events such as a hugely popular quiz night and a 1960’s themed disco which take place at the nearby allotments social club.

Chair Sophie Thompson says “I moved to this area so that my children would have somewhere safe to play. We are all passionate about protecting what we have, and the Association has really brought us together as a community.”
