At an international climate change summit in Birmingham (Tues 13 July), being co-convened by the Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street and UK100 (which represents over 100 local leaders), 40 local and regional leaders will make the case to Government for additional powers to tackle climate change, alongside representatives from 22 cities across the world. 32 leaders and mayors will sign a joint communique calling for new powers to be devolved from Whitehall including shaping local energy markets, decarbonising transport and tackling emissions from homes and offices. The International Net Zero Local Leadership Summit is being compared to the Paris City Hall Declaration in 2015, which paved the way for the Paris Climate Agreement at COP21

 

Alongside the local and regional leaders, the conference will be addressed by Alok Sharma, the President-Elect of COP26, Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP, Secretary of State for Business and the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti.

Pre-summit visit - 18.00 Monday 12 July
Venue: 100 Darlaston Road, Wednesbury, WS10 7SR
Ahead of the summit Mayor Andy Street and Polly Billington from UK100 will visit Green Square Accord, a retrofit housing scheme in Walsall. The project has transformed 22 homes in Darlaston, thanks to an innovative retrofit project to improve energy efficiency and reduce residents’ fuel bills. NB Mayor Andy Street and Polly Billington will attend the press conference and summit in person, due to Covid-19 restrictions other speakers will appear virtually. 

This summit is part of a wider effort from UK local leaders offering a partnership to national government, aimed at activating stronger and more collaborative work towards Net Zero.
