Originally, Jack-O'-Lanterns were left at our front door to ward off evil spirits in centuries past. However in more modern times, Halloween has become a much more fun tradition!

With that in mind, here are some great tips on how best to carve your Halloween Pumpkin...

Useful tools and implements before you start..

A Pumpkin!
Sharp Knife and large spoon or ice cream scoop
Marker Pen
Candle/Glow Stick or Battery Operated Light
Template and Drawing Pin

How to create you Jack-O'-Lantern

  1. Choose a good sized, smooth pumpkin, the taller the better for use with candles
  2. Draw a a circle or hexagon around the stem and cut out- try to angle this so the top is wider than the bottom, allowing the stem to fit back snugly
  3. Remove and put aside the stem, then remove the seeds and flesh from inside the pumpkin. (you can bake the seeds with salt for a healthy snack).
  4. Draw a face (eyes, nose, mouth etc) and if you're not very artistic you can us a template.
  5. You can make other cuts and scrapes in the skin to allow more light to shine through if you like.
  6. If you are using a candle, spread some petroleum jelly around the inside of the pumpkin to prevent drying out.
  7. Alternatively you can use a battery powered light ot glow sticks for a safer and longer lasting light source.
  8. Place your creation on the doorstep and enjoy!
Happy Halloween!
