We urgently need committed and caring foster carers who can offer
heated accommodation for our hedgehogs which are too small to
hibernate.
Sheds/garages should be dry, free of chemicals and have some natural
light coming in. In a smallish shed a small, oil filled heater, is quite
sufficient to keep the air at an ambient temperature. Paraffin or open
electric heaters are not suitable.
You have to be prepared to thoroughly clean it out at least once a day,
sometimes more often if the hog is a very messy one. Feeding is once at
night and weighing at regular intervals. Otherwise you leave the
hedgehog well alone – we operate a minimum handling policy. You must be
able to commit to this care over the winter months as we need continuity
(but asking a reliable friend or neighbour to help if you’re away is usually
OK). If you have no experience full instruction will be given and phone
numbers to call if you have any questions or concerns.
You would have full support from Snuffles and we may be able to help
with providing a hutch which should be a minimum of 3 foot (92 cms). long
