We were regulars at The Fox for many years before it changed hands in 2019. This was our first visit since that change of management: it is now owned by the same company that runs The Crown at Hartest, two restaurants in Bury St Edmunds and one in Ingham. The food is reliable, though, on this showing, it’s not quite what it used to be.

Whilst our mains were prepared we had some piping hot whitebait (surely straight from freezer into fryer) and a pot of olives. For the mains, two of us opted for a salmon steak (which was well cooked, though the meat didn’t fall off the fork, so maybe wasn’t as fresh as it could have been, and the two cuts looked near identical) served on a bed of crushed new potatoes and samphire (a nice touch) with a rather brightly coloured but tasty creamy dill sauce (£16). Another of our party had the lamb burger with skinny fries and coleslaw (£15): a little ordinary, and with not much to accompany the actual burger, bar the meat and some lettuce, and the mayo for the coleslaw didn’t meet with approval (I didn’t taste it so can only report the comment). The most adventurous dish was for our vegetarian who really enjoyed the aubergine Schnitzel (£16) with caper sauce, though the potato salad (which would indeed be traditional in Germany for a Schnitzel) that came with it contained a lot of raw onion, which when overdone, as here, can overpower all else. We also added a side of deep fried courgette: this was under-seasoned but a nice additional touch. Puddings were fine, if (at £8) on the pricy side, so we shared a sticky toffee pudding and a strawberry and cream tart. Drinks, at £7.70 for a 175ml glass of fairly ordinary wine, were also priced slightly on the high side, but we all accept that the margin on drinks (for the Lopez de Haro it looked like a mark-up of nearly 300%) is what keeps bistro-pubs like this alive, so fair’s fair.

Service was led by an experienced young lady who efficiently and cheerfully ran front of house (the restaurant wasn’t especially busy). Décor-wise we weren’t totally won over by the bright yellow blinds on the windows but at least they complemented the sauce around the salmon! That detail aside, the place has a comfortable feel and the staff were enthusiastic and attentive. I agonised whether to give this meal three or four stars, as the food was not quite reliable enough across the board to earn four stars, but the good service just tipped it into the higher category. But only just.

Beautiful pub situated on a busy road so easily findable. Service was fantastic, very friendly and prompt. Food was excellent, I had an aubergine schnitzel which had a really delicious caper butter drizzled on top. Will definitely be returning.

Evening meal with friends. Midweek.
Usually go to Hartest Crown but they gave us vouchers to use the sister pub.
Very noisy on arrival, but only 1 other table seated. Children were making a din. Our friends asked if we could move somewhere quieter but even sitting in the nook/alcove it was noisy.
Food was tasty, choices good.
Friend asked 4 times for wine list, waitress never delivered and he went and ordered a bottle from bar area while staff stood chatting.
Soft furnishings, blinds, maybe cushions would absorb some of the noise, but more importantly STAFF, need to be sharper and more professional or you will continue to loose customers.
Would we return? Probably not tbh, and we live just round the corner in great henny. Sad such a local place is so disappointing.

We had a fantastic Sunday roast here yesterday. We have been to all of the Gusto Pronto pubs and had the Sunday roast. Think this was our favourite so far, although they're all great.
Good service, lovely, friendly staff. Excellent food. What more could you want!

We came here for a Sunday lunch today and it was amazing. Service, food, and the atmosphere was all brilliant, and the front of house were all so so friendly. Couldn’t recommend it enough- would 100% come here again!

As expected - the service was excellent. The whitebait was excellent, would recommend as a “while you wait” to everyone.
However our main courses were well below the standard we had come to expect.
The ale-battered haddock was soggy and didn’t taste of ale at all. The skinny chips weren’t skinny.
My fish chowder lacked flavour. The soup base needed seasoning and worst of all was the mussel shells were broken and shards of the shell broke off into the soup!
However the lemon posset as a desert was heavenly as were the lovely short-bread biscuits.
We will have to consider if and when we come again.

We booked The Fox for a retirement do and would just like to say a huge thank you for the Taco buffet - everyone said it was delicious and a little bit different to the usual sandwiches & cake.
We all had a really good time catching up with colleagues, past & present, it was very relaxed and we were not rushed at all. It was so lovely seeing everyone having such a good time.
It went so smoothly. Thank you to all the staff at The Fox, I will definitely recommend you to others.

We were met by a very polite young man who had a good knowledge of the drinks. We opted for Foccia and duck as a starter, both adequate portions. The duck was tender and tasty. Steak & chips and steak burger followed, good size portion and equally tasty.

The young man continued with excellent service throughout the evening. Could not fault anything.

Went on Saturday night with 3 friends. Food was lovely but quite expensive. It wouldn't have taken a lot to add some more vegetables as the portions weren't that large for the amount paid. Staff were polite, friendly and interior was nice/ clean.
