LPG fuelled cars, are they worth it?

The possibility of converting your family car to LPG fuels has been available for some considerable time now. But has this really taken off and is it really a viable option?

I was always dubious as to what effect an LPG convertion would have on your engine and what it could potentially do to the resale value of your car.  But I don't think that these were really blockers in the conversion process?

What has been the effect of more economical cars?  A decade ago, the average fuel consumption of a family car was probably in the region of 30mpg, now it is probably upwards of 40mpg.  Has this had a commensurate effect on the viability of LPG conversion?

Also, are there enough LPG equipped filling stations to make it viable?

Then we have the electric option! Are electric cars now taking over as the de-facto Eco option?  Also, has the electric option got the legs and ability to make big inroads to the market in place of traditional petrol and diesel fuel cars?

Also, the 'dual fuel' Toyota Prius offers a serious option that combines traditionally fuelled with electric alternative, meaning that the short range issues that continue to hamper purely electric cars are removed for this model. Is this where the market should be going?

So, I've asked a lot of questions here! Anyone got any answers?  Or, more importantly, what is your view on the Eco car market, where should it be going and are we likely to see a really viable alternative to traditional fuels in the near future?
