I was contacted by Maria Ormesher at the welwyn garden City office.
To remind me my car insurance needed renewal.
She explained clearly what was the best option for me this year.
Very professional easy to chat to .
Happy to go with Howden Insurance again this year .
They make it easy to do renewal
My wife also uses this company.

Some really good, some really poor experiences in getting this car insurance for me and my wife. I have decided to go ahead with it this year because of the good bits of the service I received (even though I easily found a quote with the same cover significantly cheaper on the internet) but after this experience I won't be renewing it next year with Howden's.

Good bits:
- I received a lot of attention quite late in the day each time I went to the office (3 visits were necessary);
- After an initial quote that was too high, the team went out of their way to reduce it as far as possible, apparently taking a big chunk out of their commission for the policy;
- The team seemed happy to spend as much time as necessary to answer any queries I had
- I was keen to have available a local agent who could, in the unlikely event of needing it, just handle any issues for me. Previously I had had a warm feeling about them, so I was approaching the renewal in a positive frame of mind vis a vis Howden's.

The not so good bits:
- The insurance renewal for our only car was to be in my female wife's name. As I (the male husband) was the one in front of them asking for a renewal, they assumed (I suppose, not wholly unreasonably) that it was to be in my name. It only came to light when I sent in the proof of no claims bonus, which was in my wife's name.
- I sent the information in and followed it with an email asking whether it was significant. I received no reply to the mail. By this time there were only a couple of weeks before the policy needed to kick in.
- About 10 days later, I visited the office for the third time to check if the name needed to be changed. It did. Same car, same conditions, same drivers, same NCB, same licences, same everything as had previously been stated. Except the price was about 10% higher. This was unacceptable and I said so. The poor lady providing this information politely explained that the insuring company used a method whereby the policy cost increased the closer to the start date it became. Therefore she couldn't bring the cost down to what I had already paid. I said I would accept it this time but wouldn't be renewing.
- A couple of days later the new documents arrived by post, as requested. They were in my wife's name, but this time she was described as being male.
- Ringing the office this time, I pointed out the error. The documents were changed and I asked if there would be any difference in price this time. Without missing a beat, I was told that there wouldn't be any difference. There obviously wasn't a check.
- Shortly afterwards, I received the new documentation in my email - not by post as I had requested.
- The following day, to check my facts, I spent yet another frustrating hour filling in form after form on the internet. It was no surprise to find a series of policies that provided the same cover for considerably less - one was even about 25% less than I had paid going through Howden's.

- When I added the experiences with Home Insurance (not renewed automatically in 2025) and Professional Indemnity Insurance (no replies despite 3 visits to the office asking for a quote) that was enough for me.

So there you go. No single item justifying getting overly upset about, but the cumulative effect was enough to convince me that I should look elsewhere from now on. A shame, because I liked the individuals who I engaged with: I just didn't like the lack of proper attention to detail I got.
