Step back in time and discover life as a trainee soldier at this free, family-friendly WWII event

Experience history brought to life at a special World War Two Open Day at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings.

This free drop-in event commemorates the building’s role as a temporary barracks and training centre during WWII - where soldiers once slept on the floors and nicknamed it the “Rat Hotel”.

Time: 10am – 4pm
Entry: Free (no booking required)

Perfect for all ages, the day is packed with interactive activities and fascinating insights into wartime life, including:

  • Re-enactment volunteers showcasing equipment and soldiers’ kit
  • The chance to train and drill with the Home Guard
  • A live demonstration of an authentic air raid siren
  • Opportunities to explore real military records of soldiers who trained on site
  • Hands-on fun with grenade beanbag training
  • “Splat the Rats” activities inspired by the building’s history
  • Guided walks around the local area highlighting the impact of WWII

Free Guided Tours:
Tours run twice daily at 11.30am and 2pm (approx. 1 hour). Places are limited, so booking is recommended via email:
