The University of the Third Age  (U3A) was established in Britain in 1982 and there are now over 500 local U3As, each being affiliated to "The Third Age Trust".

Oswestry’s  U3A meets every Tuesday morning in the Memorial Hall, Oswestry between 10 a.m. and 12 noon and its Programme Secretary books a varied programme of speakers.

Additionally, there are over 40 special interest groups aimed at stimulating mental, physical and social activities and embracing  a wide variety of subjects, skills and crafts. Any older person who is not in full-time employment is eligible to join.

For further information with details or our programme and interest groups, take a look at our website: www.u3asites.org.uk/oswestry.

I met with Valerie of the Oswestry U3A in the delightful surroundings of the Wynnstay Hotel, Oswestry.  The name U3A has always intrigued me - The University of the Third Age - what a wonderful name suggesting that there is always much more to learn, people to meet, things to do, whatever your age.

Valerie is the U3A Membership Secretary and is a wonderful advert for it.  She told me about some of the activities from walking to yoga, the warmth of the social contacts and how much fun they have!

ACTIVITIES AND GROUPS

The range of activities is quite astonishing. There are discussion groups, garden visits, historical tours, canal walks, art appreciation, digital photography, music, poetry and prose, social history, a theatre group - to name just some!

They organise regular visits, for example, to London to see Oliver, the Edinburgh Tattoo and Ludlow Medieval Festival.

Whatever your interest, there will probably be a Study Group to get involved.  Current Study Groups include Watercolours, Bird Watching, Books, Bridge, Calligraphy, Canal Walking, Choir, Cooking, Cultural History, Digital Camera, Discussion Groups, Games, Gardening, Handbell Ringing, Industrial History, Mah Jong, Music, Philosophy, Poetry & Prose, Science & Tech, Social History, Scrabble, Textile Crafts, Travel and Theatre and Yoga.  Phew!

MEETINGS

The Oswestry U3A meet in the Memorial Hall, Oswestry every Tuesday morning from 10am to 12 noon.  Why not pop in as a visitor?
