Plant a Seed Day – Saturday 13 April, 10am to 2pm, Bailey Head

Incredible Edible, an initiative to encourage local food growing, is organising a seed sowing event as part of Plant A Seed Day. Members of the public – adults and children – can come along to the Incredible Edible stand on Bailey Head on Saturday 13 April between 10 am and 2 pm and have a go at sowing some seeds of edible plants, such as carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, beans, peas, etc. Free seed, pots and compost will be provided, and experienced gardeners will be on hand to demonstrate and help people. Everyone can take their seeds home, and hopefully enjoy some home-grown produce later in the summer.

Incredible Edible aims to establish community gardens, encourage home-growing of food in the smallest of spaces (such as pots and balconies), make use of surplus produce at times of plenty, plant some public areas with edible and insect-friendly plants, and compile a list of volunteer gardeners with expertise and time to help with projects. Other planned activities include setting up a tool bank, holding an Apple Day in October, and organising a Footfall display in an empty shop window.

Plant A Seed Day is part of Edible Britain, a national scheme that aims to improve the environment, bring communities together through gardening, and see new public herb and vegetable gardens planted across the UK. Through community food growing, people can meet and learn from experienced gardeners, and enjoy fresh healthy local food.
