To celebrate Lichfield’s history and heritage, tourist providers across the city are hosting Lichfield Heritage Weekend. The event will feature a fantastic range of themed performances, walks, activities and entertainment for all ages.
The city’s Market Square will play host to free activities and entertainment on Saturday, including free face painting and the chance to make a ‘crazy’ Georgian wig.
There is also a programme of entertainment on the Market Square, with St Michael’s Choir kicking off proceedings at 11.45am. The annual Samuel Johnson birthday celebrations will take place at 12noon, followed by a performance of The Doctor and the Dancing Dog by Intimate Theatre at 12.45pm. The afternoon will also feature sea shanties, Lichfield City Council’s Mini Town Crier Competition, as well as street dancing and music from The City of Lichfield Concert Band. Intimate Theatre will also perform at Speakers’ Corner at 11am and at Erasmus Darwin House at 2.30pm.
Heritage venues will throw open their doors, including The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, Erasmus Darwin House, Lichfield Cathedral, the Guildhall prison cells, Lichfield Record Office in Lichfield Library, Wade Street Church, Cruck House and Dr Milley’s Hospital.
Erasmus Darwin House is hosting a Garrick300 Georgian Garden Party over both days, from 11am to 5pm. Visitors can experience Georgian festivities in the House and Herb Garden, as well as buy homemade cakes from the pop-up tea room and play traditional 18th century games.
At Beacon Park you can follow the Shakespeare Garden Trail for 20p, which will lead you to plants mentioned in some of Shakespeare’s works.
The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum will continue the festivities indoors, from 10.30am to 4.30pm, with an exhibition, Garrick dressing up, and activities.
