Also known as Spring Festival, Chinese New Year is the most important date in the Chinese calendar and celebrates the start of new life and the season of ploughing and sowing.

Commencing on the first day of the lunar month, Chinese New Year finishes on the 15th day when the moon is at its brightest.

Chinese New Year offers many traditions e.g.

Before the festivities - Chinese people spring clean their houses to sweep away any bad luck;

On New Year's Eve - all cleaning equipment is put away so that good luck can't be swept away; and families meet for a large, traditional family meal. People stay up until midnight, setting off fireworks to see of evil spirits. Chinese people also dress in red.

New Years Day - children wake up to a red envelope filled with money and sweets under their pillow left by parents and grandparents

15th day of the lunar month - Chinese New Year ends with the lantern festival and a dragon dance takes place. In Britain the lantern festival and dragon parades may take place on New Year's Day.
