Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason, why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, guy, t'was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England's overthrow.

By God's mercy he was catch'd With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.

And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!

As November 5th approaches, we remember the night Guy Fawkes plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament by letting off fireworks and fire crackers as well as lighting the biggest bonfires - often bigger and better than the year before.

For me bonfire night conjures up special memories of Catherine Wheels, Toffee Apples, Penny for the Guy and not forgetting standing around the crackling bonfire - and in those days you could get pretty close!

But we must remember the various safety issues surrounding this major event:

  1. Make sure you go to an organised fireworks display as public displays they will have had to meet various Health and Safety Standards.

There are several listed on The Best of Lichfield including:

Lakeside Bonfire & Firework Display at Lichfield Golf and Country Club (2/11/13)

Fireworks Display at Lichfield Rugby Club (1/11/13)

  2. Keep sparklers at arm's length - they are heaps of fun but VERY hot so you must wear gloves. Ensure children are fully supervised.

  3. Did you know that an estimated 80% of pets are scared of fireworks?  Keep pets indoors. Loud noises and vibrations cause animals great distress. Pool House Veterinary Practice in Lichfield can give you excellent advice on taking care of your pet on Bonfire Night.

We want you to have a great bonfire night but REMEMBER REMEMBER to stay safe!
