Sussex event raises funds for Lichfield museum

A recent track day at Goodwood motor circuit has raised several thousand pounds for Erasmus Darwin House in Lichfield.

Goodwood motor circuit, near Chichester in Sussex, is known worldwide as the venue for historic motorsport – the Goodwood Revival meeting held annually since 1998 attracts over 100,000 spectators each year.

On a sunny 29th May the circuit was available to 30 cars of various ages and types – two hotted up Morris Minors, some 1960s British sports cars, a few Porsches and modern saloons such as Saab and BMW.

The event had been organised by Christopher and Heather Darwin, patrons of Erasmus Darwin House in Lichfield, which is the museum in the cathedral close dedicated to the grandfather of Charles Darwin.

Christopher reports: - ‘A track day is definitely not a race but an opportunity to drive your own car at speed on a motor circuit. Consideration for other drivers is the greatest priority to ensure safety – overtaking is only on the straights. We obtained at short notice a discounted day at Goodwood, all the drivers enjoyed themselves and it was an ideal opportunity to support my distant uncle Erasmus Darwin.’

£3600 plus Gift Aid – a total of £4500 - was raised for the Erasmus Darwin Foundation, which runs the museum on Beacon Street in Lichfield. Alison Wallis, Manager of the museum said “we really appreciate all the work Christopher and Heather put into organising this event. They’ve supported the House for a long time and, being a descendent of the Darwin family, we know Christopher has a vested interest”.
