Prepare your car for winter driving

The mornings and nights are getting colder and it won’t be long until winter arrives, but is your car safe to drive?

St John Street Garage in Lichfield offer some good advice on preparing your car for winter:

  • Car battery – the cold weather is hard on car batteries so ensure yours is checked.  Consider preserving the life of your battery by turning off unnecessary controls.
  • Tyres – if your tyres are worn, they won’t hold the road in wet and wintery conditions. Ensure they have adequate tread depth of at least 3mm.  Also make sure there is no splits or bulges in the tyres.
  • Windscreen washer - make sure your reservoir is fully topped up with water and treated with a suitable additive to reduce the chance of freezing.  Avoid ordinary engine antifreeze as it will damage paintwork.
  • Windscreen – make sure you vision is not obscured through dirt or snow as you may face a large fine.  Keep your windscreen clean at all times.
  • Windscreen wipers - Check your windscreen wipers for damage and replace them when necessary.
  • Lights – keep your lights and number plate clean as they can become very mucky during bad weather.
