There was a great atmosphere on Saturday as people browsed the general market, and again at Sunday’s Lichfield Chamber of Trade and Commerce Christmas Fayre and Lichfield Christmas Farmers' Market.

The weekend’s entertainment included festive music, songs and carols by Lichfield 1st Scouts, Walsall Operatic Society and Cannock Salvation Army Band, as well as performances by local musicians and dancers.

On Sunday The Lichfield Mysteries performed The Nativity in front of a large crowd. Fifteen people went on the Christmas Tour through the Ages, led by Green Badge Guide, Sue Baird. The Saturday walking tour was rounded off by the fire with refreshments at The George Hotel.

More than 300 people enjoyed carols and birthday cake at Erasmus Darwin House’s Georgian festivities. Around 250 people visited the Guildhall cells over the weekend, and many people also took part in the traditional Christmas event at The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, which included carol singing, flower arranging and refreshments.

Father Christmas also made an appearance on Saturday, stopping by the Market Square to wish everyone a merry Christmas.

On Sunday, seven-year-old Matthew Hall was announced as the winner of the Angel and King fancy dress competition. He won a family ticket to see Alice in wonderland at the Lichfield Garrick and a selection of gifts from Mooch Kids.

Gordon’s Celebration Cakes was chosen as the best dressed stall on Sunday. Lichfield City Council’s Mayor, Councillor Janet Eagland, presented the winner with a cheque from the Chamber of Trade and Commerce and a bottle of champagne courtesy of Waitrose. The second prize was awarded to Mr and Mrs Duffill for their fragrant waxed animals stall. They won a hamper donated by Tesco.

Councillor Louise Flowith, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “I am delighted so many visitors joined us for this year’s Christmas Festival, including six coaches loaded with tourists who came to the city to enjoy the event from as far afield as York and Wales. The weekend was packed with festive treats for all the family, and it was a great way to start the countdown to Christmas, and a fantastic way to bring even more shoppers and visitors into the city.”
