Most of us have spotted the increase in pet ownership since the pandemic. You will have seen the pooches walking beside their loving owner, or sprinting after a tired old ball in the local park. It’s possible you have also spotted cats lazing in the sunshine, or heard your friends talking about their latest furry friend.

The latest pet ownership statistics back up these observations. The share of households owning a pet was relatively stable for years, at around 45%. Then in the first year of the pandemic, when we were all at home and wanted the companionship and fun a pet brings, the figures shot up to around 60%. It’s also no surprise to learn that cats and dogs are the most popular pets in the UK, with dogs being slightly more common, in 34% of households.

Alongside these millions of pets is a vast industry supplying them all with food, bedding, toys, veterinary services, clothing and even professional therapy care. And as always Lichfield can take care of our furry companion’s requirements.

You may be surprised to hear that Greenhills Nursery supplies more than just pretty shrubs and plants. This family-run business, established in 1994 has just become stockists of Soopa healthy dog treats too. These are all made using natural ingredients and are grain free and suitable for dogs with weight issues, allergies, pancreatitis and low immunity. While you are browsing it may be worth asking about their dog grooming service. Helen Leigh is a City and Guilds Level 3 qualified dog groomer, who is also canine first aid trained. Her aim is to offer your dogs a pampering experience within a professional salon, in a peaceful countryside setting.

Our beloved pets will, from time to time, be affected by illness or injury. Pool House Veterinary Group has been established for 150 years and has four practices throughout the local area. They take great pride in their work and appreciate the importance of making sure your pet feels comfortable and relaxed in their care. They continually invest in new healthcare equipment and technology, as well as keep their staff well trained.

Sometimes cats and dogs may need more specialised treatment and Lichfield is home to an amazing advanced care facility. Mobility Matters is a veterinary hydrotherapy and rehabilitation centre which offers care and support services for cats and dogs to help improve their mobility. Specialising in hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, acupuncture and chronic pain management, the team operate from a purpose-built centre and helps to restore function and improve mobility in pets suffering from injury, illness or disease.

With many of us now returning to work and leaving our pets behind there has been an upsurge in professional dog walkers. This is a fantastic service for your canine friend and helps relieve the guilt of leaving your dog behind for the day. Why not check out the many local dog walkers available in our region – our favourite is Abi Withers, based on Darwin Park with her business Dog House Training and Walking.

Having a pet can bring companionship, fun and happy times – they get you outdoors more, enjoying the beautiful countryside around Lichfield. What’s not to love about having a pet!
