If you are interested in the Georgian period or the history of science and technology, have some spare time to donate, are looking for a new challenge, or simply enjoy meeting new people, then Erasmus Darwin House invites you to attend an open day for potential new volunteers which will be held at the Museum between 1pm and 3pm on 2nd April.

Although best know as the grandfather of Charles Darwin, Erasmus Darwin was a man of many and varied achievements himself. Not only was he an inventor, botanist, philosopher and founder member of the Lunar Society but he was also considered the foremost poet of his day. Indeed his abilities were such that the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote of Erasmus that he had “a greater range of knowledge that any other man in Europe”. He achieved all of this whilst pursuing a successful career as a physician. Sadly today this former resident of Lichfield is little know compared to his famous grandson which is why the Erasmus Darwin House was founded to promote his life and work.

However the Museum does much more than that, it also runs a whole range of events and educational sessions, provides a welcoming retreat in the form of its herb garden and hosts Weddings, conferences and seminars. All of this could not be possible without the help of a committed team of volunteers. Museum manager Alison Wallis said “We have a fantastic bunch here at Darwin House but we are always on the look out for new volunteers to help us grow as a museum”.  There is a fantastic range of opportunities for anyone to get involved with, including helping run science workshops, giving guided tours, getting stuck into the herb garden or welcoming visitors to the House. To find out more drop by on the 2nd of April to speak to some of the current volunteers about their experiences and hear from local MP Michael Fabricant, a friend and supporter of the house, on why your help is so important.

If you are unable to attend the open day, but would like to find out more, then please telephone the house on 01543 306260.
