Cathedral Camps, which are run by UK volunteering charity CSV, will see young people getting involved in all aspects of Cathedral life - from clearing overgrown shrubs from dark corners of the grounds, to marshalling the Staffordshire Hoard On Tour (which is expecting 14,350 visitors during its three weeks in Lichfield, with all tours sold out).

The camp takes place on Wednesday 3rd to 10th August 2011. The camp brings together young people from across the UK and Europe who have a personal or career interest in heritage conservation, are undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh award, or just like to have fun and get to know people from all over the world.

Chris Nuttall, Cathedral Administrator commented:

“We are delighted to welcome Cathedral Camps to Lichfield.  We hope that for the young people involved it will be a worthwhile and memorable experience. Their assistance will be invaluable in helping us to address some long overdue tasks, and in welcoming visitors to the Staffordshire Hoard on Tour.”

One of the two Camp Leaders, Emma Robinson said:

“I’m really looking forward to working as a leader at the Lichfield Camp. What could be better than spending a week surrounded by some of our finest national architecture and getting to know fellow volunteers from across the world, whilst making a tangible contribution to the future of our unique heritage?

Rebecca Wilkinson, CSV’s project manager for Cathedral Camps, said:

“Every year our army of young volunteers demonstrate a positive impact to protect our faith buildings. Their spirit and passion plays an important part to preserve our architecture from disrepair.”

Each camp runs from Wednesday to Wednesday for one week with Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday free for relaxation or exploring the local area.  Activities are arranged for the evenings to see the sights and have some fun with fellow campers. Campers make a contribution of £155 towards accommodation, food, tools, equipment, instruction, supervision and work materials.
