Local agencies, groups and volunteers worked hard to present a stunning Christmas lantern parade through the streets of Burntwood. And thankfully, due to a thaw in the recent freezing temperatures, the parade could go ahead.

Led by Burntwood Rotary Club’s Santa, it featured more than 100 lanterns of all shapes and sizes - including a Christmas cracker, a fairy, a Christmas tree, a penguin and much more.

Around 300 people set off from Cherry Close Youth Centre to parade the inventive lanterns through the streets of Burntwood. Lots of spectators also enjoyed the procession on its way around the town.

The parade finished at Burntwood Leisure Centre, where everyone had the chance to enjoy a winter market in the sports hall and an ice rink on the grounds. Approximately 500 people came to the winter market, which included craft stalls, face painting and refreshments.

Councillor Helen Fisher, Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “This year’s parade was truly spectacular. I was blown away by the creativity of everyone who made the lanterns. They looked brilliant, and made a huge impact once they were lit and altogether. The atmosphere on the night was buzzing, and I really enjoyed meeting lots of local people who were so enthusiastic about the event.”

The Burntwood Christmas Lantern Parade is supported by Lichfield District Council, Staffordshire County Council, HomeZone Living, Forward Action Burntwood, Burntwood Leisure Centre, Burntwood Community and Learning Partnership, Staffordshire Police, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue, Staffordshire Young People’s Service, B-Arts, Burntwood Town Council, Lichfield and District CVS, and lots of volunteers.

Ian Parry, Deputy County Council Leader and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, added: “A big well done must go to everyone who was involved in making the parade such a success.”
