Staff from Age UK South Staffordshire’s Intergenerational Team will be at the school on Wednesday 25th March from 2:00 pm to 4.00 pm and invite members of the local community to drop in, enjoy some light refreshments and learn more about the range of volunteering opportunities and services offered locally by Age UK South Staffordshire.

The Eat Well Staffordshire team will be doing a cookery demonstration at 2.30pm and providing a selection of healthy snacks alongside the more traditional tea and cakes.

St James C of E Primary School is a small school in the pretty village of Longdon, just outside Rugeley in the Lichfield District area. The school welcomes children aged 4-11 from the local community and from the surrounding areas including, Rugeley, Cannock and Lichfield.

Working in partnership with St James, the Children Matter project, run by the Intergenerational Service and funded by the Big Lottery Fund, currently has two volunteers in the school to provide extra support with reading for all age groups. The volunteers have also worked hard to help to create a special garden area for the children to enjoy over the summer months.

Claire Shaw, Head Teacher at St James, said “We are extremely grateful to our volunteers. They are such dedicated people who want to help our children to achieve and have already become a valued part of our school community. We are hoping Age UK South Staffordshire continue to find more people to help out in school”.

This is a sentiment echoed by all the schools currently involved in the project. “We have now recruited over 100 volunteers in over 30 Schools in Lichfield, Cannock, South Staffordshire, Stafford, Burton and Tamworth” explained Project Organiser, Debbie Wilkes. “The time our volunteers spend with individual children has a huge effect on their achievements in school. We are always looking for more volunteers who can share their time, skills and experiences and we hope for a good turnout at this event”.

If you're free next Wednesday then why not drop in for afternoon tea you may even decide to become a volunteer!
