It's hard to describe this place. There's a sense of peace and respect here, very similar to visiting some of the European war grave sites. However, the memorials also explain the history of individual regiments and the personal stories of civilians, resistance fighters and other people affected by war. The memorial to those soldiers executed for cowardice in World War I was particularly moving. The layout and size of the arboretum forces you to slow down and think.

Coronavirus measures have been well thought through. You have to pre-book for parking and a one way system has been implemented in the main buildings. We felt safe during our visit.

This is my second visit, the last one being about 6 years ago. There have been some positive changes to the welcome building, but the memorial gardens were just as I remember. Beautifully laid out and maintained with good signage and plenty of benches throughout the site. On this occasion I brought my 89 year old mother for her first visit. Disappointingly, the motorised scooters that would have enabled her to move freely around the park were not in use. I found this strange considering the land train was available for use . My mother thoroughly enjoyed her visit but found it a struggle to see much of the arboretum on foot. She was not keen on using the land train as she felt that it would not allow her to see the grounds in detail.

Absolutely lovely place to wander around, we were there from 11am to 4pm and still didn't manage to get around it all. The staff also managed social distancing very well. Turn up for the books is they had a bbq on as the weather was nice 👌. Highly recommended place to go, not so much for kids to do unless they are interested in what everything there is about.
