Leicester Tigers have been granted conditional planning approval for a £100million development on the former Granby Halls and Fosse Day Centre sites which lie adjacent to Welford Road stadium.

Leicester City Council last night approved an outline planning application which incorporates a four-star hotel, together with new facilities for the University Hospitals of Leicester and the University of Leicester on the site of the former Granby Halls, and a multi-storey car park and office development on the former Fosse site.

David Clayton, Leicester Tigers managing director, said: "We think the plans are innovative and exciting, and we have worked closely with our neighbours to help meet the requirements of the University Hospitals of Leicester, the Leicester University and Leicester College, as well as providing a hotel to serve the city centre.

"The benefits will permeate through the whole community and will also allow Leicester Tigers to continue to develop.

"We believe the scheme will enhance this area of the city and give Leicester another eye-catching landmark development."

The first phase of Leicester Tigers' stadium development at Welford Road will be completed for the start of next season when the opening of the new Caterpillar Stand will take capacity at the country's best-supported rugby club up to 24,000.
