The Western Extension of the Congestion Charge will be scrapped by Christmas 2010, well done Boris!

The Mayor announced that there will no longer be an £8.00 a day charge for the Western extension zone which covers almost all of the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Pimlico, Belgravia and Bayswater.

The decision was made after a public consultation which showed that a majority was against keeping the charge in its current form.  There was proof that it failed to reduce congestion in West London and at the same time caused serious damage to local business such as Portobello Market.

Mr Johnson said:  “The people of West London had the western extension unfairly foisted upon them and they have now voiced their antipathy for it loud and clear on several occasions.  After negotiating a testing course of several legal hurdles, I am delighted to be able to confirm that it will now be removed by Christmas.

“It will be vanquished, annihilated and obliterated, with road markings literally blasted from the earth over the festive period.”

The original Central Congestions charge zone which covers Vauxhall Bridge Road axis, Edware Road and Park Lane will continue as now.
