WORKING - now at the Concordia Theatre 22-27 March
24th February 2010

Many Theatre-goers will have heard of “Wicked”, currently a smash hit in the West End and Broadway.  Nearly everyone has heard of “Godspell”, one of the original rock musicals.  They were both composed by Schwartz, together with two other well known shows “Children of Eden” and “Pippin”.  He also wrote film scores for Disney in “Pocahontas” and the “Hunchback of Notre Dame”.

When Schwartz read Terkel’s book “Working”, he felt that a musical was in there somewhere.  The book took Terkel three years of workplace interviews numbering 6000 in all to come to fruition.  He died last year aged 89, just as President Obama won the nomination in Hawaii.  As a consequence there is a revival of interest in his work.

The musical uses 24 true stories intertwined by wonderful and evocative songs, using several different types of musical styles from the pen of Schwartz, and in 4 songs from the brilliant guitarist-composer James Taylor.  In all a high quality pedigree and the result is something very special, not often seen, but well worthy of any Theatre-goers’ time.
