Thousands raised for Marlow Rowing Club after tragic fire

  • River & Rowing Museum support rowing community after heritage-rich Marlow Rowing club tragically burnt down in August
  • Over £2800 raised through quiz night hosted at the Museum
  • Part of ongoing fundraising campaign to help beleaguered club

On 8 October the River & Rowing Museum hosted a hugely successful quiz night in aid of the Marlow Rowing Club Fire and Build Fund.  The event was part of a fundraising initiative which is raising money in aid of the Marlow Club which was seriously damaged by fire on the 3 August with the loss of it’s clubhouse and many boats.  Despite this tragedy a huge fundraising drive has been set in motion to raise the considerable sum of money required to get this community sports club back on its feet.
The quiz evening held at the River & Rowing Museum was extremely popular with over 200 attending, giving an invaluable boost to Fire and Build Fund.
Teams of all ages entered from Marlow Rowing Club, Leander Club, the Museum and the local area in Henley-on-Thames. Heart-warming community spirit was the flavour of the evening as junior rowers were particularly helpful throughout, collecting question sheets and delivering food. The evening also included a raffle - another chance to raise funds - with the top prize being a meal at the Leander Club. The event raised a fantastic £2800.

Lisa Hann of the River and Rowing Museum, who organised the quiz event worked with junior members of the club through the Museum’s Knowing Rowing education programme. She said “I felt so sorry for the club after the fire back in August.  Not only the damage to the building and the boats, but the potential loss of the clubs heritage was devastating. I really wanted to do something to support the rebuild and this seemed like a fun way of raising money.”

The Museum’s spacious Schwarzenbach International Rowing Gallery was the ideal venue for the event, as guests were surrounded by the Museum’s extensive collection of historical boats and rowing exhibits, giving the participants much to talk about and the occasional correct answer along the way.
Marlow Rowing Club will continue to raise money for the Fire and Build Fund, for more information and to make a donation see the website for details of upcoming events: http://www.marlowrowingclub.org.uk
