Henley and the May Day Weekend

Henley hosts two great events this May Day Bank Holiday Weekend. First up is Henley Arts Trail. The trail is held over 3 days from Saturday 3rd May until Monday 5th May.  The trail visits 24 locations around Henley and Twyford. You can visit artists’ studios and venues with exhibitions in them. Opening times of venues differ so please check the Henley Arts Trail website for details. The trail is sponsored By Henley company Lady Sew & Sew.

The trail is a showcase of the finest talent, with artwork by over 150 award-winning, established & up-and-coming artists. It includes painting & drawing, jewellery, wood turning, textiles, ceramics, glass, sculpture and photography. Whether you are looking for a centrepiece for your home, a present for someone special, or just some bank holiday entertainment, we have something for everyone.

In 2014 there are 24 venues along a trail from Bix in Oxfordshire to Twyford in Berkshire. An eclectic mix of venues includes galleries, village halls, a manor house and a museum as well as artists' home studios. Visitors can go to as many venues as they like.

The artists will be there to welcome guests and show their work. Some artists will be doing demonstrations or workshops for members of the public who want to have a go themselves and many venues offer refreshments.

Kate Findlay (chairman of the Henley Art & Crafts Guild), Judith Fletcher and Kirsten Jones set up the first Henley Arts Trail in 2006. The Trail has grown in size & strength each year and is now a significant event in Henley's social calendar. The Trail is opened each year by the Mayor of Henley.

The other main event in Henley-on-Thames on is the town’s May Fair on the bank holiday Monday. Held at Mill Meadows, Henley-on-Thames, it opens at 12:00pm with live music from Mythical Men, entertainment and activities all afternoon to 5:00pm. The event is organised by Henley’s Round Table and sponsored by local company IBS.

There will be children’s fancy dress and baking competition. Ferret Racing is returning for another year by popular demand. We hope to have the Duck Derby taking place, but this is yet to be confirmed. We also have Morris Dancers with their traditional display. Henley’s Girl Guides will also be having a stall including a tombola with exciting prizes.

So a great weekend to get out and about in Henley!!
