SHIPLAKE

The Baskerville Station Road RG9 3NY 0118 940 3332 http://www.thebaskerville.com/

I have always liked the Baskerville but to be honest have not been there for quite a while. So on Easter Monday I drove the car to Shiplake Station and cycled back home to Henley. This meant that we could walk along the river to the Baskerville and then have the car to drive home. Despite it being a desperately cold Easter Monday the walk from Henley via Marsh Lock to Shiplake was lovely. The cold weather certainly enhanced the appetite! Being a real ale fan the Baskerville is a good place to visit as they have two of my favourite beers, Landlord from Timothy Taylor and Hoppit from Loddon Brewery. Also on tap was Doom Bar and London Pride. The pint of Landlord was quickly despatched. It looks like the front bar has had a makeover, and you can just go for a pint. The restaurant had a lot of bookings for the time that we arrived but we were quickly seated and dealt with. The Baskerville restaurant has a warm and friendly feel to it and the service was excellent. Also excellent was the food. With five of us dining I won't describe everything chosen but just to say that all five of us were delighted with our choices. Especially popular was the Scotch Egg starter, the Steak and Kidney Pie and the Chicken. This was the first day of the Baskerville's new Spring Menu. We really liked the Baskerville and would recommend a visit either for just a drink, snack or a full meal. Also noticed that they hold special village nights featuring a limited British menu with money off house wine. The Baskerville has an AA Special Dinnner Award. http://www.theaa.com/pubs/lower-shiplake-the-baskerville-arms-376118

The Plowden Arms Reading Road RG9 4BX 0118 940 2794 http://www.plowdenarmsshiplake.co.uk/

Under new tenants Matthew Woodley and Ruth Peters. They are serving old fashioned dishes such as a starter of Herrings in Oatmeal and a main course of Salt Cod, Bacon and Pease Pudding. Must get along there to try the food and feedback on here.

Ruchetta Peppard Common RG9 5JU 01491 628343 /http://www.ruchetta.com/peppard

We have driven past Ruchetta many times and have always said that we must give it a try. So in February we did book a table. The first thing that we noticed when we arrived was how busy Ruchetta was. However we soon were seated and got a very friendly welcome. What we didn’t know was that we had booked for one of their popular music evenings. Ruchetta serves a traditional Italian menu very well. The food was excellent and despite being very busy the service was prompt. We enjoyed the food and would definitely visit again. Worth checking whether there is a music night or not as it was quite intrusive. We didn’t mind as the singer was covering lots of old favourites and everyone joined in.

ROTHERFIELD GREYS

The Malsters Rotherfield Greys RG9 4QD 01491 628400 http://www.maltsters.co.uk/

A favourite with us. Always a friendly welcome from Peter, Helen and their team. Food is of the welcoming sort and gets good reviews on Trip Advisor. Often have French food brought over by the Landlord.

CHECKENDON

The Black Horse A real ale favourite of mine serving West Berkshire Ales and a guest. No airs and graces here just a lovely rural setting and good beer. A real step back in to how a country pub used to be many decades ago. No food. Long may it continue!! On National Cycle Route 5 from Reading to Oxford.
