Stay safe on Bonfire Night

Today I spotted a temporary firework shop opening near where I live - I was reminded of how careful we non-pyrotechnicians have to be on Bonfire Night! Even the original Gunpowder Plotters, conspiring to blow up James I and Parliament, called in an explosives expert – Guy Fawkes, no less. Yes, he did come to a sticky end but that was for committing treason, not because he got hold of the wrong end of a sparkler.

Anyway, I really would urge you to go to a public display and here’s why:

  1. Public fireworks displays are safer than ones at home. Someone with a lot of training and experience will be responsible for procuring the fireworks, planning how they’ll look in the sky and setting them off. They’ll have fire extinguishers and the support of the emergency services, keeping accidents to a minimum.
  2. A public display will probably last longer and look better than anything you can put on in your garden!
  3. People who don’t like fireworks and animals who are frightened only have to “put up with it” for one night of the year instead of spending a month of misery while the neighbours take it in turns to let off their fireworks.
  4. You’ll spend a lot less on the entry fee (if there even is one) than you will on fireworks for your own display.
  5. There’s a great atmosphere!

If you are still determined to host your own firework display, please, please take great care and follow the firework code:

  • Keep fireworks in a closed box
  • Follow the instructions on each firework
  • Light all fireworks at arm’s length
  • Stand well back
  • Never go back to a lit firework
  • Never put fireworks in your pocket
  • Never throw fireworks
  • Keep pets indoors
  • Use only BS 7114 Fireworks

All the local fireworks displays are now listed on the Best of Guildford events page- click over there now to plan your Bonfire Night!
