Guildford Borough Council has announced its exciting plans for hosting and celebrating the 2012 Olympic Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

The programme of events has been agreed by the Council’s Executive and includes outline funding and proposals for community and landmark events across the borough.

Councillor Jen Powell says: "There will be a host of iconic sporting and cultural events in 2012 and Guildford will be at the heart of these.”

“We will also welcome the Olympic Torch Relay on 20 July 2012 as the final borough before it reaches London.  The evening torch celebration event in Stoke Park will offer thousands of people the opportunity to come together, watch the torch and get involved.”

"We want to inspire our future generations and welcome everyone to share in the Olympic spirit.  The £240,000 funding will be used to host and manage the main events and help our communities across the borough to celebrate both the Olympic Games and Diamond Jubilee in 2012."

As part of the evening celebrations LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung, will stage exciting entertainment shows where a cauldron will be lit from the Olympic Flame, marking the end of the day’s proceedings.

Guildford is also a host borough for the Olympic Cycle Road Races, which will pass through the eastern side of the borough on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July 2012.
