Good to be back

Hands up who enjoyed the recent long bank holiday weekends?

Me too.  Although having said that it’s definitely good to be back.

As much as I enjoyed some well earned downtime, I missed the buzz of being at work and running my own writing and editing consultancy Claire Dee Communications.

For some smaller companies, however, the return to work was much more about the bottom line than the buzz.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), bank holidays can be very costly for small businesses with many not trading and making profits on these days but still having to pay staff for the time off.

The FSB says that the post-Easter and pre-royal wedding three day working week may have cost UK businesses £6 billion in lost productivity alone; and at a time when they are already having to contend with a leap in VAT, increased running costs and some of the highest energy prices in Europe.

What are your thoughts: are bank holidays a welcome break or a drain on time and resources?

Personally, I’m a great believer in work hard/play hard which is why – following a busy week in the office – I made the most of the royal wedding celebrations by enjoying a champagne brunch with friends while watching the day’s events unfold on the BBC.  Cheers Will and Kate!
