This is our 8th stay at Fermain. Our room - which we request, as has a beautiful sea view - is amazing. Although, our towel rail isnât working, so we canât dry our towels or swimsuits. The staff, Katia, Julius, Kevin to name but a few are incredible. But, unfortunately, since being taken over by Hand Picked Hotels, it has changed dramatically. Whilst on holiday, I like to enjoy a glass of Sauvignon blanc, or Pinot grigio, or a decent glass of blush. But unfortunately, these are but available by the glass! On sale are some rather dreadful wines, which are grown in Julia Handâs vineyards. I might use them to clean my shower cubicle doors, but I couldnât drink them - they were awful. Rock Gardens used to be fantastic. Steak from all over world and it would be booked up months in advance. Now it is empty - with no atmosphere. When we ate there, there was a choice of two types of steak! . Filet and Chateaubriand were off the menu too! Itâs not the waiting staffâs fault - itâs the management! Buhu is fabulous - no problem there, but would we return, just for a Mexican restaurant? Something has to seriously be changed, before this once amazing hotel returns to its former glory. Our âgo toâ hotel on Guernsey due to the location.
Unfortunately, since Hand Picked Hotels have picked the bones from a once superb accommodation, service, variety and that âfeeling specialâ vibe has deteriorated/vanished.
The staff are as wonderful as ever, hard working, attentive and passionate.
If only the management, who were non-existent, would follow suit.
Waiting times to be served in the Ocean Restaurant and the Rock Garden were well over an hour in the evening, management failings so no blame should be apportioned on the waiting staff, with very limited menus compared to days of yore prior to Hand Picked âgive emâ a small choice but we make a bundle philosophyâ.
Oh how I yearn for a steak from Brazil, Argentina, Ireland or other far flung countries around the globe that the Rock Garden was famous and revered for.
Not anymoreâŚ..Saturday night just gone, a very apologetic waitress announced that they only had two steaks available and an even more sparse wine selection. Itâs akin to popping to your local Indian and being told âsorry weâre out of curriesâ!
Friends and other guests also commented during our stay that âthings are not as they used to be prior to Hand Picked Hotelsâ involvement.
Thank goodness the staff at the front end are still trying to hold this once fabulous hotel together.

We stayed 3 nights but wish it could have been longer. Lovely location (our room had a sea view) and you could walk down to the little beach but quite a steep climb coming back ! We did take friends down to the beach for lunch one day but without any notice the cafe was closed so that was a bit disappointing. The pool in the hotel was also closed but they did offer use of the pool at their sister hotel ( but decided it was too much bother)
Breakfasts were amazing.
All the staff (except one) were super efficient and friendly giving us great advise and service. One member of staff deserves a particular mention and that is Catia on reception . She was incredible and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely stay her again â¤ď¸

Chose to stay here while setting up an interview with then-resident, the late Oliver Reed, and I was pleasantly surprised at what a terrific place it was. I was the only American guest (the idea of a Californian travelling all that way seemed to amuse them), and I just had a marvellous time. They also have fantastic Christmas packages that only the Brits can handle with aplomb. The grounds are nice, the service is great, the employees just loved to be there....very impressed. My favorite spot in Guernsey and I've been in a few.

Well itâs not often I say it , especially if you have read any of my other reviews ,
This hotel is spot on , just returned from a 4 day stay , The food , the staff , the cleanliness of the hotel 1st class , the management run a very well organised machine , never had to wait for service anywhere , the staff were very polite and helpful, a special mention to Paul behind the bar , such a happy pleasant guy even when very busy .
A few points to make , itâs up a fairly steep hill from the port , donât be fooled by a short 3 mile taxi ride it will set you back ÂŁ20-25 from the airport.
Around the pool is lovely but quite small so abit of sunbed hogging goes on which is a shame .
Fantastic restaurants all over the Port , even use the hotel the evening meal was lovely too .

Room/bathroom were nice and big and the balcony looking out to the garden was perfect in the sun. The room was clean, although a little dated.
I booked on Agoda which made the price a little more digestible, tourism is at its peak in August so prices inevitably rise with this.
The hotel is big so can be noisy depending if there is a party or wedding. We had a 40th party pretty close but the windows did a pretty good job at keep this down to a minimum.
As a guest you get use of the pool/spa facilities. You need to book in advance for any massages, which we did. Was great being able to sit outside on their decking area in the jacuzzi, in the sun. Although, would be nicer if it were more private.
Finally, location is great. You have a decent restaurant (Nineteen), a short walk up the hill through the grounds. A big Waitrose across the road and the walk to town is up hill initially but definitely doable, maybe 20mins.
