If this review was only being written about the staff it would be a 5 star review, but I have to take into account the whole stay. We were picked up from the airport by Pedro, who was very polite and helpful throughout our stay. Check in was easy- we arrived around midday and given that check in is from 2, only one of the rooms was available, so we went to the bar for a drink and by the time we had had our drink the other room was ready. The four star rating is due to the room. Other reviews have mentioned some of these points, but the only available plug socket to charge phones or boil the kettle was low down by the bathroom door. The kettle is hidden away in the wardrobe! The toilet roll holder is located behind your head in the bathroom!! There is absolutely no ventilation in the room other than opening windows and doors, which then welcomes in any outside noise and moths, etc at night!!!
The cold tap in the sink runs mostly warm, and yes, the planes fly right over head. Is all of this a disaster? No, not really- it would most certainly not put me off from staying again given the location in the beautiful bay, about a 20-30 minute walk from St Peters port where a lot of attractions are. The planes don't fly all night- I think the latest we heard on our weekend was around 9.30 when we were still in the bar area, and I wasn't woken up in the morning by a plane. The views from the rooms and bar areas are lovely on a sunny day looking out at the sea. The staff are a credit to the hotel, every one of them was welcoming, friendly and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. The food was of a good quality both for breakfast and dinner. The bar and restaurant staff In particular were kept busy during our stay but would always stop to take a drink order with a smile! Also worth a mention is the cafe at the bottom of the road- be sure to visit and take in the lovely setting, the atmosphere and food is good too!

We were in the venue building which is a short walk from the main hotel. Whilst it was pleasant (and the staff were all great) I find it hard to justify the price which was £150 a night. Our room was a reasonably sized double, comfortable and clean but I was surprised there was no air conditioning or fan and the weather was hot. We were picked up by the complementary taxi and dropped the following day into town. The second booking a week later was a little less successful, the taxi wasn't available (there was apparently a wedding on, although one of the cars was in the drive), the feather bedding wasn't swapped as on the first night (unfortunately for me I can't have feathers), the decanter of sherry wasn't removed (ok maybe that sounds a little fussy but i don't like alcohol around so I had asked in advance, and asked a second time at the desk), and our dinner was quite late which again isn't a huge deal but I was staying with a young child and yes, I did book well in advance). There was no choice of restaurant on either night again because of weddings. Maybe i'm being a bit harsh, it's probably great to have a private hire but it's a bit like being fitted in amongst other people's more important weddings in a room which is above a wedding venue. No idea what the cinema was about, there was no information about it, I think you are supposed to hire the whole thing if you want to see a film.

I have been staying at the Fermain Valley for a couple of days every week on business for the last three months so I am in a good position to review this hotel.

Quite simply it is excellent. The staff are all very friendly, the rooms and entire hotel are spotlessly clean, the food is extremely good and the location is beautiful.

If you like steak dinners then you must visit the Rock Garden which is one of two restaurants attached to the hotel, it really is very good.

The hotel offers a shuttle service that, subject to availability, can drop you into town / pick you up from the airport etc.

Should you have time to walk down to the bay there is a really good beach bar which serves food until late afternoon (about 4pm I think) but be warned that it is a very steep climb back up to the hotel from the bay.

We stayed here as a family of three end August - early September 2016 for 5 nights.
Overall, the cleanliness, quality of accommodation and dining as well as service (staff are empowered to fix issues and try hard to help) exceeded our expectations. Our only regret is that when using booking.com to purchase the room, we could not tell from the photos what type of room we would get. We were disappointed with the size of our room (49 - see more info below) but the staff managed to move us twice - which was a hassle, since they were almost fully booked, but worth it. Breakfast is great since hotel residents can choose from a range of hot / cold items for free from the table menu: we tried most of the dishes between us during our stay and all were good and served quickly - really among the best we have experienced anywhere. We also ate an evening meal in their Steakhouse restaurant - good food (meat-focused obviously), service and cocktails, but music increased in volume by 8pm and was too noisy for a quiet family dinner, but fine for younger people on a night out. We did not try the Ocean restaurant which is a la carte, but probably that is more civilised. Overall advice is to stretch your budget to pay for a better room unless you are out all day/evening. Do walk at least once down the road to Fermain Bay which is a stony beach, but has a high-quality bistro cafe where you can pay by card and have lunch with a view. We would recommend this hotel and would choose to stay here again.

We stayed here for one night on business. Unfortunately, we were not in the main building which was a shame. The Venue is only a short walk across the gardens though and we were shown to our room by car so not really a problem. Ate in the hotel Rocks restaurant which was a brilliant meal. Breakfast was equally good and cooked to order. The bar boasted 39 gins but despite this I stuck to Hendricks. We sampled the tea rooms which offered home made cakes and teas and great prices. The down side was the surly receptionist and staff. A smile costs nothing but goes along way to making people feel really welcome. Having stayed many times in the Duke of Richmond we fancied a change but for the staff, I would probably have favoured the Fermain Valley Hotel. Also, no aircon in room which was very hot and whilst the windows open the curtains are interlined and so air is blocked. Room was nice though and everything needed was provided. Overall, very good.

Beautiful hotel and grounds. 10 min walk to beach that has a small cafe. Hotel shuttle service takes you to any destination on island but doesn't pick you up for return journey, but thats no issue with the various bus routes around the island.

We came here for our honeymoon and i have to say this hotel and its staff are a credit to guernsey. We stayed in the platinum room number 26 that is smack bang in the centre of the hotel offering an amazing view of the valley. The bar manager in the rock garden was talented fun and informative..great martinis!!. The ocean restaurant offers sublime food and is covered by a vlad a fantastic guy who made us feel like royalty he made my pregnant wife an amazing alcohol free cocktail and for me a great martini (again) Reception were helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The valley is wonderful too

We came to this wonderful hotel to celebrate our 30th Wedding anniversary. I had read mostly good reviews about the hotel and also had an excellent review from a friend who had stayed here with her husband in June. So I was not put off by some of the negative reviews of this hotel - I am SO glad I wasn't. I think the people who are writing such negative reviews were staying in a different hotel! I can't answer for what it is like in the annexe as we had a Gold room (no 32) in the main house.
We arrived an hour early but Daniel who was on reception greeted us very warmly and invited us to sit out on the verandah with a glass of Prosecco each (which I thought we would have to pay for but when final bill came we realised it had not been charged for - a lovely touch) until the room was ready. When initially shown the room we were a bit disappointed to discover it was not one of the advertised Gold rooms which look very spacious (and in fact were on the floor below us). However, the disappointment was soon gone when we walked out on to the balcony and saw the stunning view down across the beautiful hotel gardens to the sea. The kingsize bed was very comfortable, a fair amount of storage for clothes was available, excellent selection of tea, coffee, drinking chocolate and biscuits which were re-stocked every day. This is also the first hotel we have visited that supply an abundance of little UHT milks although we bought fresh milk and kept it in the fridge. The fridge was stocked with four bottles of water every day and a decanter of sherry was also refilled every day - not normally sherry drinkers we were converted with this one - lovely! TV is low down towards the ground but it didn't cause us a problem watching it. Bathrobes and slippers provided. Good powerful shower. Cleanliness excellent - housekeeping work very hard to keep the rooms looking so clean. The only downside to the bedroom was that there was no airconditioning which we were very surprised at for a four star hotel (first one we have stayed in without it) and our 10 day stay here was in the most beautiful hot weather! A fan was provided but this didnt really do much to alleviate the heat. Talking to Gavin the relations manager he explained that air conditioning has not been installed due to cost but that it is something that is being looked at. Hope that before we visit again that it has been put in.
The food in this hotel is absolutely excellent. Breakfasts were amazing with a vast selection of fruit juices, cereals, fresh fruit salad (and no, not out of a tin, it really was fresh), meats, cheeses, pineapple and melon slices, croissants and pastries, yoghurts. On top of that your orders are taken for a cooked breakfast which is freshly cooked for each table so none of this buffet style where you end up with just a warm breakfast. Tea, coffee and toast brought to your table. Service was absolutely excellent, the waiting staff were all very efficient and friendly. I was particularly impressed with Greg who remained very calm when one woman started complaining quite loudly about the cooked breakfast (couldn't see why she was complaining personally!). Apart from her I didn't hear any complaints from residents throughout our stay. We were fortunate to be there for the last hotel barbecue of the season although unforunately it rained on the scheduled day. However it still went ahead in the restaurant and the food was again fantastic. A young singer was there to entertain as well. I was very impressed with Dane, the waiter, who realised our table was a bit wobbly and so found some card to wedge under the table which was really thoughtful of him. It's touches like this that leave a good impression.
On our anniversary day we booked a table for the Rock Garden Steak House attached to the hotel - we were not disappointed! The steaks were cooked to perfection - one medium rare and one well done -both excellent. Atmosphere was lovely in there, the staff were all very friendly, efficient and professional. It was a lovely surprise to also find an anniversary card from all the hotel staff on the table, Again a really lovely touch to add to making this such a fabulous hotel.
In the afternoon we also had tea and cakes from the tea room in the hotel - this is something you MUST do - cakes are divine!
There is a SMALL swimming pool and sauna which we used quite frequently and had to ourselves each time. If you are a serious swimmer this pool wont be enough for you - you can do a length in 6-7 breast strokes. However, it is the warmest pool we have ever been in - it was like a bath! Ample for us but like I say not if you want to swim lengths.
The hotel also has a library (stocked with lots of books) and a lounge plus a room to connect up a laptop and work if wanted. Free WIFI throughout the hotel and connection was always there without any problems. Up in the annexe there is a cinema, which we didnt actually use. However, you only have to book a time with reception and you can view your own DVD's or hotel choice on a big screen.
I have to say we are glad we were in the main house and not in the annexe as it is a fair way from the main hotel up a fairly steep path. Guests need to come down every morning to the main hotel for breakfast which is fine if its sunny but not so good if raining. So go for the main house if you are able.
If you are coming by Condor ferry with your own car it is easy to get to the hotel. Come out of the port, turn left at the roundabout, along the promenade (20mph restriction) to the end and then follow a steep winding road until you get to a mini roundabout at the top. Take a left there and then follow the road along. You will shortly see a sign saying The Venue (which is the annexe) opposite a pub called the Fermain Tavern. If you are stayin in the annexe you can turn in to the car park there and then walk down the path to the hotel reception. If you are staying in the main house you need to drive just past the Venue and then take the next left down a narrow steep hill and then take the next left into the main car park (which is not big). From there you can easily get to reception. Leave your bags in the car until you know which room you have been allocated. There are lifts available.
I know I have said a lot but I just wanted to make sure that you had a good impression of this hotel as quite a few negatives have been said about it. We only ever stay in four star hotels and I have to say this is by far the best one yet (despite no air conditioning!)
Guernsey itself is a wonderful place to stay. So easy to get around it. Lots of lovely places to walk, drive, beaches to sit/swim/surf on. Loads of excellent places to eat and drink. Boat trips over to the islands of Herm, Sark and Alderney (try and get at least one in). Guernsey residents very friendly, helpful and interesting to talk to. Places we visited included the Underground German Hospital, Saumarez Park, Sausmarez Park (yes two different places), all the beaches, walked the cliff paths for miles, ate in several good places including Dix Neuf, La Perla, The Terrace and found numerous excellent coffee/tea rooms around the island. You will not be disappointed in your visit I'm sure and if you stay at The Fermain Valley Hotel you really will NOT be disappointed. Thank you to all the staff for making our wedding anniversary such a wonderful occasion. WE WILL BE BACK!!

We visited Fermain Valley for a short break in September 2016. The hotel and grounds are lovely, with a great terrace and views over Fermain Bay. The staff were very attentive and friendly. There is a shuttle bus but you need to book it early if you want to use it as our experience was that it wasn't available at short notice. However taxi into St Peter Port was between £8 and £10 so not too bad between four persons. There is also a regular bus at the top of the road although we didn't use it.

Our room was in the annex which is a two minute walk through the beautiful garden from the hotel. The room was very well appointed and bed was comfortable. The complimentary decanter of sherry was a nice touch and a great start to wonderful evenings out! (there is also complimentary water, tea and coffee)

Our only gripe was that when we booked we knew we were in an annex but the hotel pics show a wing on the side of the hotel which we thought was the annex. We were therefore surprised that our room was a short walk instead. We booked through booking.com and we were told that their rooms are usually in this annexe so beware if you are expecting to be in the main hotel. All that said, the annex is fine and very comfortable.
