I booked a five night stay at the Fermain Valley based on my previous experience at the Braye Beach Hotel, the sister hotel in Alderney. Richard and his team run a fine hotel in Alderney, it exceeded my expectations in many ways. Regrettably, the same cannot be said about the Fermain Valley.

Having studied the hotel web site I opted for a Gold standard room based on the pictures and description provided. The room I was nothing like the brochure, more of a gold minus room. The room was much more compact than illustrated, the balcony was only half the width of the room, half the size of most other Gold rooms and three was no sea view, not even distant glimpses. The Web site is very misleading.

The bathroom was very compact with no space for toilet bags and their contents and the small bath with a shower over it which necessitated a very high step over the bath would have been much better as a large walk in shower.

I advise caution when booking a Gold standard room, there are clearly some significant variations and I got a lot less than advertised.

There is a small safe but it is very awkward to access under the cloths on the hanging rail.

Ventilation was very poor with only a small fan light window unless you left the door open and suffered the consequence of sharing your room with a variety of insect life. Since the room gets full sun during the day it really needs air conditioning for a comfortable night's sleep.

The room was kept clean and tidy which is more than can be said for the terrace areas which looked in need of a good clean and some maintenance.

With the exception of the reception staff, service was uninspiring and at times very casual, but the quality of food was very good in both Ocean and the Rock Garden.

Strangely, the Ocean restaurant closed for two nights during the middle of August, but there are so many other good places to eat on Guernsey.

The hotel advertise a car pick up service for the airport and the town which us very convenient and avoids the challenges of parking in town. When this is not available, Island taxis offer a good service or there are frequent buses that stop on the main road near the Venue building and it is only £1 a journey.

The hotel is in a narrow valley and parking is limited near the main hotel buildings. There is additional parking up the hill by the Venue building but it is a good climb up the hill through the very well presented hotel grounds. I suggest you check where the room you are booking is located as some rooms are in the Venue building which is a few minutes walk through the grounds. This may not be a problem on a nice sunny day but I would find it a pain in the wet every time you wanted the bar or restaurant.

It is worth noting that the hotel is in direct line with the runway of Guernsey airport which means you do get aircraft noise as an alarm clock from around 7.00 a.m. The noise is worse when aircraft are approaching to land as they are a lot lower and this seemed to be the most frequent occurance.

Overall this hotel is OK but it is nothing like the standard of the Braye Beach and there are other better hotels on Guernsey. It does not appear to have the leadership or the buzz that makes Braye Beach so special.

Went to Guernsey for my birthday just for the weekend had a fabulous time. Went with Fly be, well supposed to be Flybe, however, the company has been taken over by DOT air line the plane was I'm sure the one first flown by the Wright brothers. It was small very noisy and for refreshments only water was available. Coming back was a bit better we had choice of refreshments. A very short journey from airport to our hotel. Fermain Valley hotel was fantastically located very clean, comfortable and the view from its ocean restaurant balcony/veranda was spectacular. The staff from manager to receptionist, restaurant and bar staff they were all fantastic. Very polite, friendly and very efficient. Over all for everything I would give that hotel 5 star and would recommend it to every one. My wife and I were sitting in the ocean restaurant balcony enjoying the view I accidentally knocked my drink over and broke the glass within seconds the bar manager was there and not only cleared up the mess he also replaced my drink without a charge I was pleasantly surprised and am utterly grateful for that.
Every where we went we noticed very well kept houses and commercial properties and their gardens were emaculately kept so clean and tidy place. I'm sure all the people in Guernsey must take great pride in keeping the place so nice I greatly admire them. We went to Herm Island and walked around the Island it was wonderful. We most certainly will go back again as we had such a wonderful time. Our thanks to every one who made our stay so memorable.

We booked a 7 night package plus an extra night as part of a 2 week stay at the Fermain Valley and its sister hotel the Braye Beach in Alderney. Strangely for 2 hotels owned by the same people we had to book separate packages with each one which was inconvenient.

We stayed at this hotel as part of our honeymoon and it was nice to see a welcome card from the staff on arrival and rose petals on the bed; this was a personal touch which we had not received at the Braye Beach.

Sadly by time we got to our room we had already been let down once when the hotel car was not at the airport to meet us. The hotel receptionist dealt with this well though when she agreed to pay for the taxi that brought us to the hotel and offered us a welcome drink.

Once we settled in our gold room we noticed that despite checking prior to booking, instead of having a double bed we had two single beds pushed together and made up with double bed linen, The room was extremely hot, so much so that sleep would have been impossible. The receptionist helped once again by providing us with an electric fan - though I wonder why in a room that get direct sun throughout the day and is not equipped with air conditioning that fans aren't supplied automatically.

If our room was anything to judge by, the rooms and infrastructure need some attention and refurbishment plus a re-design. The electric socket had a hole in the plaster above it, and for some unknown reason the kettle is inside the wardrobe! Of more concern in addition to no air conditioning was that problems with the possible design of the hotel plumbing resulted in the cold tap providing hot water the majority of the time.

The bathroom itself had no where to store a toiletry bag and had a 3/4 length bath.

Strangely the television was on a bracket about 3 feet from the floor which reduced the view of it when in bed. Although the room was kept very clean, the cleaning staff seemed to leave dirty glasses propped on the radiators in the hallways.

The hotel is under the flight path to the airport, I didn't know this before we booked, and it is not evident from the hotel website. We did find aircraft noise levels quite high as planes flew over the hotel when landing on the island. There were times when planes didn't come over but then we would see and hear 3 or 4 within 10 minutes which hardly added to the tranquility or ambience. I realise the hotel cannot control this but perhaps they could prepare customers better on what to expect.

The Ocean restaurant decor is lovely and the theme works really well . The breakfast range of food and quality of the food was excellent, though sadly many of the staff serving seemed unable to project a smile, and didn't seem happy when we requested a table outside. They were however very keen to clear up breakfast in a way that made me feel rushed.

There are a number of good things to note though, the complementary sherry served is a good quality as are the range of teas and biscuits in the rooms, the indoor pool was warm and clean, the gardens up to the 'Venue' and down to the beach were maintained immaculately. The barman made marvellous cocktails, although he didn't seem quite as happy when serving tables.

We ate in the restaurant on 3 nights as part of our package; the menu was fairly unimaginative and although the offer in our booking was for 3 meals included in with out package, this was changed to paying a supplement for steak. Our voucher did not say this it was explained to us verbally. It was slightly ironic that the steak was cheaper than some food that did not have a supplement added to it!

The hotel had a lovely lounge and library which we discovered on the evening prior to leaving as it had not been shown to us earlier, although we had been told about the cinema though I wonder how many guests choose to use this on a hot August day (unless it is the only part of the hotel with air conditioning?).

We used the complementary transport into St Peter Port on 3 occasions, this was superb and did make us feel special.

We were fortunate to eat at and visit other hotels in St Peter Port and it was immediately obvious that service was more efficient, attentive and that the staff in those establishments were well motivated which is in contrast to my experience at the Fermain Valley.

We enjoyed our time on Guernsey but I suspect we might have enjoyed it more had we expected less or stayed somewhere else. We were given a voucher for discount should we stay again but I doubt we will use those vouchers which is a shame as I had wanted to re-visit our honeymoon hotel but can't see me doing this unless significant improvements are made.

Location of hotel in very convenient, but be careful of the road in and out of hotel as it is very narrow. Service was very good and staff friendly and helpful. We ate in both restaurants and enjoyed the food - although the Argentinean Rib-eye steak in the Rock Garden, was tough.

If this review was only being written about the staff it would be a 5 star review, but I have to take into account the whole stay. We were picked up from the airport by Pedro, who was very polite and helpful throughout our stay. Check in was easy- we arrived around midday and given that check in is from 2, only one of the rooms was available, so we went to the bar for a drink and by the time we had had our drink the other room was ready. The four star rating is due to the room. Other reviews have mentioned some of these points, but the only available plug socket to charge phones or boil the kettle was low down by the bathroom door. The kettle is hidden away in the wardrobe! The toilet roll holder is located behind your head in the bathroom!! There is absolutely no ventilation in the room other than opening windows and doors, which then welcomes in any outside noise and moths, etc at night!!!
The cold tap in the sink runs mostly warm, and yes, the planes fly right over head. Is all of this a disaster? No, not really- it would most certainly not put me off from staying again given the location in the beautiful bay, about a 20-30 minute walk from St Peters port where a lot of attractions are. The planes don't fly all night- I think the latest we heard on our weekend was around 9.30 when we were still in the bar area, and I wasn't woken up in the morning by a plane. The views from the rooms and bar areas are lovely on a sunny day looking out at the sea. The staff are a credit to the hotel, every one of them was welcoming, friendly and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. The food was of a good quality both for breakfast and dinner. The bar and restaurant staff In particular were kept busy during our stay but would always stop to take a drink order with a smile! Also worth a mention is the cafe at the bottom of the road- be sure to visit and take in the lovely setting, the atmosphere and food is good too!

We were in the venue building which is a short walk from the main hotel. Whilst it was pleasant (and the staff were all great) I find it hard to justify the price which was £150 a night. Our room was a reasonably sized double, comfortable and clean but I was surprised there was no air conditioning or fan and the weather was hot. We were picked up by the complementary taxi and dropped the following day into town. The second booking a week later was a little less successful, the taxi wasn't available (there was apparently a wedding on, although one of the cars was in the drive), the feather bedding wasn't swapped as on the first night (unfortunately for me I can't have feathers), the decanter of sherry wasn't removed (ok maybe that sounds a little fussy but i don't like alcohol around so I had asked in advance, and asked a second time at the desk), and our dinner was quite late which again isn't a huge deal but I was staying with a young child and yes, I did book well in advance). There was no choice of restaurant on either night again because of weddings. Maybe i'm being a bit harsh, it's probably great to have a private hire but it's a bit like being fitted in amongst other people's more important weddings in a room which is above a wedding venue. No idea what the cinema was about, there was no information about it, I think you are supposed to hire the whole thing if you want to see a film.

I have been staying at the Fermain Valley for a couple of days every week on business for the last three months so I am in a good position to review this hotel.

Quite simply it is excellent. The staff are all very friendly, the rooms and entire hotel are spotlessly clean, the food is extremely good and the location is beautiful.

If you like steak dinners then you must visit the Rock Garden which is one of two restaurants attached to the hotel, it really is very good.

The hotel offers a shuttle service that, subject to availability, can drop you into town / pick you up from the airport etc.

Should you have time to walk down to the bay there is a really good beach bar which serves food until late afternoon (about 4pm I think) but be warned that it is a very steep climb back up to the hotel from the bay.

We stayed here as a family of three end August - early September 2016 for 5 nights.
Overall, the cleanliness, quality of accommodation and dining as well as service (staff are empowered to fix issues and try hard to help) exceeded our expectations. Our only regret is that when using booking.com to purchase the room, we could not tell from the photos what type of room we would get. We were disappointed with the size of our room (49 - see more info below) but the staff managed to move us twice - which was a hassle, since they were almost fully booked, but worth it. Breakfast is great since hotel residents can choose from a range of hot / cold items for free from the table menu: we tried most of the dishes between us during our stay and all were good and served quickly - really among the best we have experienced anywhere. We also ate an evening meal in their Steakhouse restaurant - good food (meat-focused obviously), service and cocktails, but music increased in volume by 8pm and was too noisy for a quiet family dinner, but fine for younger people on a night out. We did not try the Ocean restaurant which is a la carte, but probably that is more civilised. Overall advice is to stretch your budget to pay for a better room unless you are out all day/evening. Do walk at least once down the road to Fermain Bay which is a stony beach, but has a high-quality bistro cafe where you can pay by card and have lunch with a view. We would recommend this hotel and would choose to stay here again.

We stayed here for one night on business. Unfortunately, we were not in the main building which was a shame. The Venue is only a short walk across the gardens though and we were shown to our room by car so not really a problem. Ate in the hotel Rocks restaurant which was a brilliant meal. Breakfast was equally good and cooked to order. The bar boasted 39 gins but despite this I stuck to Hendricks. We sampled the tea rooms which offered home made cakes and teas and great prices. The down side was the surly receptionist and staff. A smile costs nothing but goes along way to making people feel really welcome. Having stayed many times in the Duke of Richmond we fancied a change but for the staff, I would probably have favoured the Fermain Valley Hotel. Also, no aircon in room which was very hot and whilst the windows open the curtains are interlined and so air is blocked. Room was nice though and everything needed was provided. Overall, very good.

Beautiful hotel and grounds. 10 min walk to beach that has a small cafe. Hotel shuttle service takes you to any destination on island but doesn't pick you up for return journey, but thats no issue with the various bus routes around the island.
