This special exhibition celebrates 40 years of Ruta Brown exhibiting with New Ashgate Gallery, marking one of the gallery's longest-standing relationships with a contemporary maker.
Ruta trained in Farnham at West Surrey College of Art and Design, now the University for the Creative Arts. With a background in sculpture, she brings a strong sense of form, surface and material to jewellery.
She is particularly known for reticulation, a process in which carefully controlled heat transforms the surface of metal and creates rich, irregular textures. Working mainly in silver, often combined with gold, stones and pearls, Ruta makes jewellery that is sculptural, tactile and immediately recognisable.
Nature has long informed her work. Weathered surfaces, rocks, shells and organic forms are translated into metal through texture and structure rather than direct representation.
Over four decades, Ruta's work has evolved while retaining a distinctive material language. This anniversary exhibition brings together that continuing practice with the story of a long relationship between maker, gallery and place.
Ruta Brown: 40 Years with New Ashgate celebrates both an individual career and the role independent galleries play in supporting artists over time.
