For the festive season, New Ashgate Gallery presents Peter Layton, one of the founding figures of British studio glass, as Maker in Focus.
For more than five decades, Peter has played a major role in the development of studio glass in Britain. He founded London Glassblowing in 1976, creating a studio that has supported generations of glass artists and helped bring contemporary glass to a wider collecting public.
In his own work, Peter approaches glass with a painter's eye. Bands, ripples and pools of colour move across generous handblown forms, evoking landscape, water and changing light. Each vessel balances control with chance: carefully composed, yet never static. Turned in the hand or viewed from a different angle, colours shift and new details emerge.
