In July 2017, SussexDolly said about Burlington Hotel
Four of us have just arrived home after a 5 day break. We originally booked the coach holiday, taking in excursions, the first to Great Diixter gardens and Rye and a half day visiting Bexhill . The holiday was booked through Shearings. We were to be picked up in Shoreham Sussex at 7.20 am and transported to London Gateway, for a stop before travelling to Eastbourne on another coach, arriving approx 4.30pm !!!! we live less than an hour away from Eastbourne and could not understand why on earth we were expected to travel up the M! first!.....Our friend that was travelling with us is in a wheelchair but can with help climb onto a coach, for which they had to pay another £20 for the privilege of sitting in the 2 front seats. As the time drew nearer we wondered what on earth were we thinking of, and so we decided to make our own way there by car , but as we had already paid for everything inc the trips, we wanted to keep them. It cost another £6 per day to park behind the Hotel and they charge another £15 for the use of a room suitable for a disabled patron. Of which there is only the one . It has a single electric bed and a general one, a large bathroom with rails, but a big deep bath! no wet room or access to get in and out of the bath or shower. The room is also situated on the first floor. Also the building does not have a ramp to enter through the main entrance, instead you have to negotiate a wheelchair through the dining room and out through a narrow side door that has a ramp. So if you have a wheelchair, do not forget that the way in is through a back door, or through the dining room. This, if you are are the person with the disabilities is extremely hard to manouvre, the door is not kept open and impossible to negotiate. When you arrive back from a day out you have to ring a bell and someone will come and let you in. We are living in 2017, but sadly some Hotels etc are oblivious to this, and the fact that real people have real disabilities and should be considered and catered for should be their right. Whilst we were in Eastbourne we also viewed the Hotel next door which is smaller, though despite this has 4 ground floor rooms with everything to help someone in our friends situation, wet rooms, rails, etc.
Our room was basic but comfortable, with everything we needed except air con or at least a fan! this hotel is unbearably HOT....there is no air anywhere. It has absolutely nothing to do with us having a hot spell as suggested by the manageress. We spoke at length to certain members of staff who told us that although there is air conditioning units they have not been used for at least 20 YEARS!!!! what on earth is that all about??? The windows in the bedrooms are painted or stuck down some other way, and after some brute force we managed to lift the sash window by 4 inches! The dining room had a couple of free standing fans that just circulated the already hot air. Neither of which were at our end of the room despite promises of ..."we will make sure you have one near you for dinner tonight"....The one and only door was sometimes propped open but generally closed again soon after. How the staff work in such conditions is a matter for health and safety in my opinion. We were ...putting it crudely dripping with persperation, the majority of the time , as were many other folk who commented on this but only to other guests. I called over the Restaurant manager and asked to speak to the Hotel Manager who was apparently away on her holidays.
The staff throughout our stay were obliging, courteous and friendly especially Marta in the restaurant who was always a ray of sunshine. The evening meals were fabulous, imaginative and tasty, the buffet breakfast not so imaginative but have had worse.
A special mention must be made to our Coach driver Kevin, he made our outings with his amazing knowledge of everything, we learnt such a lot , he also has the most fantastic personality and humor and had us in stitches. A real pro, thanks Kevin.
The Hotel is in a prime position on the seafront with the Pier opposite and the beautiful gardens, plus the shops and the Arndale centre a short stroll away. Sadly it is let down by the shabby interior, with stained carpets, peeling paintwork and complete lack of temperature control. Next time we will be booking elsewhere. Such a shame but they really need to get their act together. Read the recent reviews Bay Hotels doesn't that tell you something? there are so many decent places in Eastbourne to stay....and people WILL vote with their feet!
