As part of our Commemorative stamp sheet series, Titanic Heritage Trust will be issuing an additional stamp sheet in 2009.

It has been exclusively produced by Titanic Heritage Trust and will be the first in the 'Special Edition' series. Further sheets will be produced in this series as and when required.

The White Swan Hotel has existed in various guises over the years, being radically altered in 1852 when the 4th Duke of Northumberland, Algenon Percy bought the property. The younger son of the 2nd Duke succeded his brother in 1847.

He maried Lady Elenor Grosvenor, a daughter of the 2nd Marquess of Westminster, but had no children and was succeeded in his titled by his cousin the 2nd Earl of Beverly, he died in 1875.

The building stands today with the original frontage the Duke ordered.

The White Swan Hotel, a 300 year old coaching inn, set in the heart of the historic market town of Anlwick.

The hotel has experienced many changes over the years most noteably in 1936.

RMS Olympic was being decommissioned and scrapped at the end of her career.

The then owner of the hotel, Algenon Smart who had been a frequent traveller on the liner, bid successfully for the wood panelling, ceiling from the First Class Lounge, also the revolving door from the First Class Restaurant.

He returned to Alnwick and built the Olympic Suite with all the oak panelling and fixtures and fittings where it remains today.

Each sheet specially printed by Royal Mail and will include 10 individual stamps, 5 RMS Olympic images ~ and White Swan Hotel Images courtesy of Titanic Museum Germany, Classic Lodges and Titanic Heritage Trust with the image of Algenong Percy courtesy of Newcastle City Council.
