The 'one percents' that make a difference!

Communicate better!

We communicate with people continually - email, phone, fax (does anyone still use that?!), face to face, one to one, speaking to a crowd, discussing with a group... printed literature, websites, and probably quite a few other ways.

If ever there was opportunity for finding 'one per cent' improvements, it has to be here.

Speaking for myself, I'm certain there's never a week (maybe my wife would say 'day'!) goes by without some example of me communicating poorly. The damage that can be done by these all-too-frequent breakdowns of effective communication is massive.

This might be in lost time, relationship breakdown, money wasted or lost business. A very large proportion of miscommunication comes down to planning and management!

In the same way that days are more productive when time is spent planning, identifying goals, prioritising tasks and scheduling most important activities, we can find some significant 'one per cents' by planning our communication.

It could be well worth spending 5 minutes at the beginning of the day thinking about the following questions:

  • Who do I need to communicate with, and what outcomes are desired?
  • What will be the best way to action these communications
  • How can I group my communication to be most time-efficient?
  • What is the best way to record and track any agreed action points?

Its simple stuff, but easily forgotten!

We'll be looking more at this subject in the next in a series of Free workshops
