From 31st January 2011 VAT will be added to certain Royal Mail services for the first time. This will be at the standard rate of VAT (due to increase to 20%)

This means that anybody who cannot reclaim VAT (Individuals, Charities, Public Sector) will see the cost of some services rise by 20% overnight!

The good news is that most postage is exempt from this. There will be no VAT on stamps, franking machine or normal business account postage.

The main change will be on “courier” services – for example Royal Mail Special Delivery. Other courier services have long argued that it was unfair for this service to be VAT Free.

Certain international postage will also be subject to VAT, but this is mainly limited to contract international mail, so will not affect the vast majority of people.

Don't always assume Royal Mail is the only Option!
