First4: Changes to HSE Legislation

Welcome to the eighth monthly edition of First4Sight, a quick guide into how to deal with minor first aid incidents and basic first aid advice.

In this month’s edition, we will be looking at how the HSE laws are changing with regard to first aid training requirements.

From October 1st 2009, where First Aiders have been identified as required in a workplace, they must gain a certificate of competence from a training organisation that has been approved by HSE.

The courses should last for at least 18 hours of training, usually held over three days or spread over several weeks.

First Aid at Work certificates will be valid for three years; however, a three-hour basic skills update must be completed each year in order for the certificate to remain valid.

Requalification courses will be at least 12 hours training and are normally held over two days. A three-hour basic skills update must be completed each year for the certificate to remain valid.

Overseas First Aid at Work certificates will only be valid if they have been issued by an HSE approved organisation in mainland UK (Britain.) If a certificate has been issued by or in another country then that certificate will not be valid in mainland UK (Britain.)

Six-hour EFAW (Emergency First Aid at Work) courses will enable delegates to act as First Aiders within the workplace for three years. Again, a three-hour basic skills update must be completed each year for the certificate to remain valid.
