Local film director Richard Knew has been presented with the top award at the video industry ‘Oscars’ for his series of short films depicting modern life in the British Army.

Having been voted Best Corporate Video by judges at the Institute of Videography (IOV) Awards, ‘Royal Signals – Talk the Talk’  then went on to beat hundreds of entrants to the night’s most prestigious prize for Best Overall Production.

“Our aim was to show potential recruits what life is really like in the Royal Signals and the diversity of trades and skills they can learn,” said Richard, whose video production company, Knew Productions, is based in Rossett.

“We hadn’t imagined, while we were filming in ditches and rivers, that we would win two such coveted awards. We’re very proud of the production but most of all the Royal Signals are delighted with the results.”

During the ceremony at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena last week, the judges praised Knew Productions’ solid production standards, well thought out message and their imaginative and engaging approach to the subject.

“The IOV Awards get tougher and tougher each year as the general standards in video production rise. To win an IOV Award is a significant accomplishment indeed,” said IOV Administrator, Kevin Cook.

Knew Productions produced a total of 20 short films on one DVD which revealed a gritty and honest insight into Army life, including exclusive footage shot by the troops in Afghanistan.

The Royal Signals could have commissioned any major London production company to undertake this prestigious work, but Knew Productions’ ideas, enthusiasm and value for money ensured they led from the front.

The film crew, which included one of ITV’s top cameramen, travelled to Army bases in Dorset, Pembrokeshire and even Windsor Castle to film the soldiers at work. Cameras were also sent to those serving in Helmand Province allowing them to capture daily life on the frontline

“We were all struck by the skills and pride displayed by the men and women who showcased their skills, constructing bridges and using modern technology to communicate across the battlefield,” said Richard.

“It was a director’s dream – so much sound and atmosphere – and these Awards endorse our hard work.”
